Co-occurring disorders, also called dual diagnosis is a highly specialized treatment that focuses on the addiction as well as any underlying mental illness conditions. Since drug addiction is a psychological disease, it often leads to mental disorders and psychological issues. Similarly mental issues may well lead to addiction and substance abuse problems. Some studies have shown that up to six in 10 people that have substance abuse problems also suffer from another psychological disorder. Interestingly, these rates are similar to the rates of mental illness in people who use larger quantities of legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol.

It is of utmost importance that individuals with co-occurring disorders seek specialized treatment that address both the substance abuse issues and mental illness as one can be a trigger for the other.
