Former Drummer of Billy Joel. DeVitto has been making music for over 40 years and now gets to give back as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock. Liberty is a great drummer with a heart the size of his drum kit.

Liberty DeVitto (born August 8, 1950) is an American rock drummer. He is best known as the drummer for Billy Joel, but has also played with the NYC Hit Squad and has been a session drummer on recordings of other artists.

DeVitto was born in New York City of Italian ancestry where his father was a police officer at the New York Police Department. He taught himself to play the drums after seeing The Beatles on their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964.

After working with Billy Joel for 30 years, Devitto left in 2006 just before Billy Joel’s tour. Up to that point, he had the longest running tenure in Joel’s band, starting with the recording of 1976’s Turnstiles.

In 2003, Liberty DeVitto signed on as an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underserved public schools throughout the U.S.A. Liberty has personally delivered instruments to children in the program, performed at benefit events for the cause, and sits on the organization’s Honorary Board of Directors.

Live at Right Turn a new CD by Woody Giessmann, who is best known for his work with Boston band The Del Fuegos, has just released a collection of songs he wrote on piano. The songs are available by download or purchase a CD at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/woodygiessmann or on http://www.right-turn.org/productions.html.

Woody wrote and performed the songs live at Right Turn on June 5th, 2010 along with local musicians Jon Cohan, Richard O’Connell, Philip Kaplan, Dana Shellmire, and David Scholl.

All of the proceeds for this 10 song CD benefit addiction services of Right Turn, Inc, an innovative outpatient clinic in Arlington Massachusetts. The songs on the CD are about Giessmann’s experiences with the dark side of addiction.

The Del Fuegos were a garage-style pop band in the 1980s with lead singer Dan Zanes, guitarist Warren Zanes (his brother), bassist Tom Lloyd, drummer Steve Morrell, later replaced by Brent “Woody” Giessmann and keyboardist Br. Cleve.

The Boston-based band was signed to a series of respected indie labels, was touted by fans such as Tom Petty, starred in a beer commercial, and gained airplay with “Don’t Run Wild” and “I Still Want You”. Dan Zanes went on to a solo career and success recording children’s music in his band Dan Zanes and Friends and music videos, made popular by heavy airplay on the Disney Channel. In 2007, his album “Catch That Train!” received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album for Children. Brother Warren Zanes went on to earn two Master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Arts. He is also the Vice President of Education at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Tom Lloyd went back to college and earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley before earning a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1999.

In 2003, Woody Giessmann founded Right Turn Addiction Services, a program offering assistance to artists in recovery from drug addiction and other mental health issues.

The Del Fuegos are referenced in The Juliana Hatfield Three’s biggest hit, 1993’s “My Sister,” as well as in the song “Boston, Mass” by The Ergs. Gang Green dedicated a track from their album Another Wasted Night to them. A reunion concert is advertised to 23 June 2011 at Paradise Rock Club, Boston, Mass.

Christine Ohlman

Christine Ohlman singer of the Saturday Night Live Band will be our guest March 20, 2011 at 8PM EST on Rockers In Recovery and the East Coast Music Scene. Christine Ohlman will be talking about her 30 year plus musical career.

2010’s The Deep End, her first CD of original material in five years, featuring special guests/duet partners Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw, plus Levon Helm, GE Smith, Andy York, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Catherine Russell, Big Al Anderson, and others) with her band Rebel Montez (Michael Colbath-bass; Cliff Goodwin-guitar; Larry Donahue-drums). “I’ve come here tonight to set your souls on fire,” she’ll tell an audience. And she will. Rockers In Recovery and the East Coast Music Scene is honored to have Christine as a guest.

Listen Tonight 8PM EST March 20, Live: http://radio.securenetsystems.net/radio_player_large.cfm?stationCallSign=WWNN

The heart of Christine Ohlman has belonged to rock n’ roll from just about the moment she could walk and talk. By the time she traveled from Boston to New York on an overnight train to make her first record at the age of 16, writing the “B” side on the way to the studio, she was already a veteran of the local coffeehouse circuit around New Haven, Connecticut. “The first guy who ever signed me flew down from New York City to hear the band; he signed us the same day,” she says. “We were in the studio practically before we knew what hit us recording a version of Al Kooper’s ‘Wake Me, Shake Me.’ The next thing we knew, we were on the charts and I was in heaven!”

Christine was a founding member of The Scratch Band, legendary throughout the Northeast for their incendiary and eclectic live shows, and her stark, piano-accompanied version of Dusty Springfield’s “I Only Want To Be With You” from their first LP was a turntable hit in the U.K. Beginning in September 1991, a portion of The Scratch Band reunited in the studios of NBC’s Saturday Night Live with Christine joining guitarist/vocalist/musical director G.E. Smith and bassist Paul Ossola, both former Scratch Band members, in the SNL band. At one point, the 11-member group, featuring in its repertoire a heavy dose of Christine’s favorite music—southern soul—took the stage (joined by Ry Cooder, Steve Cropper and Maceo Parker) as the house band for The Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Awards, a performance that was, in Ohlman’s words, “just about the biggest flat-out thrill of my life. We were doing ‘Tell Mama’ and I looked around to catch Steve Cropper’s eye only to spot Clarence Carter, who wrote the song, standing in the wings waiting to come on. I thought—well, it just doesn’t get much better than this” (although she admits that the 2003 Central Park Summerstage Tribute To Janis Joplin, where she fronted both Big Brother & The Holding Company and the Kozmic Blues Band, and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Tribute Concert, where she sang with George Harrison, among others, edge out everything for sheer historical vibe).

While touring and recording with Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez are the main focus, Ohlman has other all-star concert appearances to her credit, including the Lincoln Center “American Songbook” Series (with Sting and Lou Reed), the 2009 Obama Inaugural Gala, and Celebrate Brooklyn’s Tribute to Bill Withers (with Nona Hendryx and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James). She continues to perform with the SNL Band, appearing with Al Green on the show’s 25th Anniversary Special and in the hilarious 2010 commercial parody “Carter n’ Sons Barbeque.” She is a sought-after studio guest vocalist, appearing on Ian Hunter’s Shrunken Heads (named one the Top 20 CDs of 2007 by the New York Daily News), Big Al Anderson’s Pawn Shop Guitars, and two CDs by esteemed Irish punk group Black 47. Labor of Love: The Music Of Nick Lowe features her vocal collaboration with Marshall Crenshaw on Lowe’s “Cruel To Be Kind.” And her commitment to the blues runs deep, as her scorching duets with the legendary Eddie Kirkland on his CD’s Where You Get Your Sugar and Lonely Street; her guest-shots with Charlie Musselwhite on his Grammy-nominated One Night In America; and her appearance on the Songs Of Willie Dixon (with Sonny Landreth & Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown) and Grammy nominee A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf (with Taj Mahal & Lucinda Williams) give statement.

Dedication to preserving the soul in rock n’ roll has been the hallmark of Christine’s work from the days of The Scratch Band through a stint with Christine Ohlman and The Soul Rockers to her present band Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez’ (Cliff Goodwin-guitars, Michael Colbath-bass, Larry Donahue-drums; original guitarist Eric Fletcher passed away in May, 2006). Her earliest idols were Etta James, Ray Charles, and Jackie Wilson. “My mom taught me to love those artists,” says Christine. “When she was growing up she used to frequent Cafe Society in New York City to hear Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Lena Horne. I just naturally picked up on blues and jazz through her. Then of course there was Elvis, and Jerry Lee, and the artists on Stax and Atlantic. At some point I also began to listen heavily to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James. So my songwriting reflects influences old and new. I always tend to lean toward wild guitar bands—you know, the ‘crazies’.” (Ohlman continues this fascination with musical tradition via her work as a music writer and musicologist. She was an original editor of the All-Music Guide, edited legendary producer Andrew Loog Oldham’s 2002 autobiography 2Stoned, and is a cover-story-writing contributor to Elmore Magazine)

Ohlman has released six CDs with Rebel Montez. The Hard Way, Radio Queen, Wicked Time, Strip, and 2008 career retrospective Re-Hive are joined by 2010’s The Deep End, her first CD of new material in five years. Co-produced gby Andy York (John Mellencamp), it featuresduets with Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw and guest shots by Levon Helm, Big Al Anderson, G.E. Smith, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, and others.

No stranger to tragedy, Ohlman suffered, in addition to the loss of longtime musical collaborator Fletcher, the death in 2005 of her mate and producer of more than 25 years, Doc Cavalier. Re-Hive is dedicated to his memory (as The Deep End is to Fletcher’s. .Following Cavalier’s passing, she produced a memorial concert at legendary rock club Toad’s Place in New Haven, Connecticut that featured 26 acts and nearly 100 musicians pivotal to the professional life she shared with him. “This is a time of reordering in my life,” she said recently. “There are no words to describe the empty spaces left by these losses. I feel I honor the memory of Doc and Eric by creating, by writing, and by performing. It hasn’t been easy by any means. But friends and fellow musicians have been extraordinary in their generosity and support. Michael Colbath, Larry Donahue, Cliff Goodwin and I look forward to the next record and to future collaborations.” Ohlman says, “The songs on The Deep End deal, in some ways, with the subject of loss, but much more importantly with the ways that love intersects with life to bring a kind of joy into one’s heart that is sometimes bittersweet.”

With her trademark mile-high platinum beehive hairdo and enviable collection of sequins and rhinestones, Ohlman looks like a lady to be reckoned with, and when she opens her mouth to sing, the truth comes out. But underneath it all lurks a no-frills approach to music. In her own words—”I give it to an audience straight, which is the way I like it myself. Yes, I like to shout, and I like to croon, and I love to wail. I just need to get in the groove and rock—not think too much about it– tear it up or soothe it over. I’ve loved rock n’ roll since I was a little girl, and I’ll love it forever. It’s my greatest kick and my greatest privilege to be able to get up on a stage and rip it apart. That’s rock n’ roll to me. I’m here to set your soul on fire.”

Ricky Byrd Bio:

Lotta dues Jim, Lotta dues

That’s a line from a play about Lenny Bruce, and man oh man ain’t that the truth!!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining! I’ve had an unbelievable career so far and I’m very grateful.

Imagine a 13 year old sitting in his bedroom with his first guitar that “almost” stays in tune. He’s dreaming big dreams, hoping someday……you know the rest!

Well I got my wish. I’ve traveled the world with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, had a couple of hit records and played guitar for two of my favorites–Roger Daltrey and Ian Hunter. I’ve also had the damn good fortune to have shared a stage with everyone from Jimmy Page, Leslie West, Steve Marriott to Rufus Thomas (I got to “Walk the Dog”)

I’ve had artists who I love and respect cover songs I’ve written ,and even got to decorate a wall in Byrdland with a few gold and platinum records.

Nice huh?

Problem is I’m not the kind that can rest on my laurels (you know how painful that can be!).

This is now and now I’m a solo artist–playing my songs, making my music and fighting my battles!

To be honest I’m feeling a little punchy from all the fighting.

But I promise you this…they’’ll have to carry me out of the ring still swingin’ and still singin’.

Let’s face it the music business (what’s left of it) is not for the faint of heart. it can break your spirit and leave you bitter.”It was you Charlie…you shoulda watched out for me. I coulda been a contender!”

Sorry, I had a Brando moment!.

Anyway as the saying goes… you buttered your bread now you gotta sleep in it…or something like that.

Where was I? Oh yeah

These days I have no illusions or expectations other than making the coolest music I can and have fun doing it.

So keep your eyes and ears open cause sooner or later I’ll be coming to your town. It might be a stadium,a theatre,a club or maybe even a coffeehouse, but you can bet the farm I’ll have a big ass grin on my face and be happy to be there.

See you in the trenches, Ricky

9PM EDT KASIM SULTON on Rockers In Recovery Oct.17,2010

Sunday Night Oct.17,2010 on Rockers In Recovery at 9PM EDT singer/songwriter Kasim Sulton will be interviewed on his new CD release coming in 2011 and how you can be on the cover and much more it’s called “The Project”.

A highly coveted sideman, singer/songwriter Kasim Sulton is recognized and respected the world over for his work with other artists, including Todd Rundgren and Utopia, Meat Loaf, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates, Patti Smith, Patty Smyth, Mick Jagger, and Celine Dion to name just a few.

His level of involvement has ranged from playing bass, keyboards, and/or guitar, to adding vocal harmonies, singing lead, and contributing as a songwriter, to producing entire albums, as he did with the Meat Loaf VH-1 Storytellers CD, released in 1999. There isn’t much he hasn’t done in his 25 years in the music industry.

In April of 2001, Sulton began showcasing his own music for the first time since the early 80’s release of his self-titled debut album. He scheduled a few solo acoustic shows in his home state of New York. They were to be small, quiet shows just to test the waters, but word quickly spread and fans traveled from miles around to show their support. Enthusiastic fans welcomed him with open arms, and venues were soon asking when he’d be back. The overwhelming success of these early shows prompted Sulton to hit the road for a full tour that summer. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and some stories from his past and present, he played his way across the U.S. including stops in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, and Milwaukee. In Chicago, Sulton made an appearance at the Guitar Center where he met with fans, signed autographs, and posed for photos. In Rochester, he made a similar appearance at The House of Guitars, played a stellar concert at The Little Theater, and was asked to stay in town a few extra days to sing the national anthem before the start of the Rochester Red Wings baseball game at Frontier Field; an honor he graciously accepted.

Up next on the agenda, was to be his completing the new CD.

However, this would have to wait, as Sulton’s talents were in demand once again – this time, as bassist and musical director for a European tour with Meat Loaf. The “Night of the Proms” tour consisted of 47 concerts in Belgium, Germany, and Holland over a period of three months, stretching well into December. By the time the tour was through, it was Christmas.

Upon returning to the U.S., Sulton continued working on his CD while gearing up for another six-week solo tour to test out a few new songs before live audiences. The tour began February 1st and saw him visiting many new markets, including Boston, Washington DC, Albany, and Detroit. In Westerly, Rhode Island, Sulton appeared on a network TV special. Radio stations WJJO/Milwaukee and WCSX/Detroit welcomed him to their airwaves for live interviews while he was in town, and print media was supportive in every market he played. The 21-date tour wrapped up march 16th with a standing-room-only show at The Bitter End in New York City.

A few weeks later, Sulton signed an independent recording contract with Sphere Sound Records, based in Rochester. Now he will be focusing on his own music. “I’ve been wanting to record a CD of all new material for some time now,” says Sulton. Now that time has come.

As one of the most in-demand players in the business, Sulton will still answer the call when asked to perform with other artists; so don’t be surprised to see him onstage from time to time with Meat Loaf, Tommy James and the Shondells, or any other artist lucky enough to enlist his talents to enrich their performances. But after years of playing with others, Kasim Sulton is finally giving his own music the center stage it truly deserves.

Chuck Negron founder and formerly of the band Three Dog Night will our guest on October 21,2010 at 10PM EDT on Rockers In Recovery listen live on WWNN 1470 AM radio and the Holistic lifestyles Radio Network. This interview will highlight Chuck Negron’s http://www.negron.com/ life and music we look forward to a great show. Chuck will be performing at the 12 Step Music Fest in Sugarloaf Key November 4-7, 2010.

From a humble Bronx, New York apartment to success and wealth far beyond anything he could imagine, the Chuck Negron story is an amazing saga. For what could have ended on a deadly downbeat is today a wonderful story that gives us all hope and faith that miracles do happen.

Rock-n-Roll first made a difference in Chuck’s life in the late 1950’s. By the age of 15, he had recorded his first single record and performed at the world famous Apollo Theater with his vocal group “The Rondells.” A stone cold dead silence ensued as the curtain rose on the Rondells. “We were not just the only white group on the bill,” Negron recalls, “we were the only white people in the building. But by our second verse, something magical happened. The audience started to cheer us on.” That night Negron learned an important lesson, that music transcends all barriers and differences that people might have. “That’s the power of music.” Soon after his Apollo triumph, the teenage Chuck Negron and the Rondells began haunting Manhattan’s famous Brill Building. “I came to believe that the difference between a good singer and a great singer was the songs they sang. I looked to see who was writing the great hits of the early rock-n-roll years. The same names came up over and over again; Leiber and Stoller, Goffin and King, Mann and Weil, Bacharach and David, among others.” They would go from office to office in hopes of meeting some of these great writers to sing for them. They performed 10 to 20 times a day for publishers as well as record companies.

By 1961, it was decision time for his future. Chuck had received several scholarships to play college basketball. In addition, he had a desire to pursue a music career. Chuck decided to do both. He accepted an athletic scholarship from Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, which was just a few hours from Hollywood. Chuck was later recruited by Bill Sharman, coach at Cal State, Los Angeles, a “stone’s throw” from Hollywood and the recording industry. Now in California, attending college and playing basketball, obtaining a recording contract was next on Chuck’s agenda. Columbia records came calling after Chuck and the Sorenson Brothers had radio success in central California with two single releases, “Sharon Lee” on the Marlinda Records and “I Dream of an Angel” on the Heart Van Label. In 1965, Columbia Records signed Chuck Negron-Rondell to a recording contract. With his hoop life now behind him, Negron arrived in Hollywood to make a reputation as a recording artist and performer. “I learned a great deal while on Columbia. The producers and A&R people had total control. They picked all my songs, the arrangements and ultimately how the world would see me. I learned you must be more than just a singer. You must be able to define yourself in some special way. A unique vocal style, image or presence, through your song writing, or ability to pick great songs, arrange and produce them.”

In 1967, Chuck Negron became a founding member of Three Dog Night. A vocal trio whose roots would be in R&B, rock-n-roll and urban doo wop, but, whose music would be totally new and unique. Chuck felt one thing might be missing. Great Songs! Chuck went back to the publishers who represented the great writers he loved as a teenager. These publishers would also introduce Chuck to new, up and coming writers. Chuck brought Harry Nilsson’s “One” (Is the Loneliest Number) to the group. Chuck also selected and sang lead on Elton John’s first song to be released in the U.S., “Lady Samantha.” He also picked and sang Paul Williams’ “Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Out in the Country,” Laura Nyro’s “Eli’s Coming,” David Loggins’ “Pieces of April” and Hoyt Axton’s, “Joy To The World.” Chuck also discovered many other new writers as well. Built around the pop soul vocals of Negron and Wells, great songs, brilliant musicians and a powerful three part harmony – few bands were as consistently popular in concert or on the music charts. In an era when Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Motown were competing for chart position, TDN dominated the charts and sold 50 million records by 1975 – 90 million records sold to date.

The world was introduced to Chuck Negron and Three Dog Night in 1969 by the breakthrough – and the band’s first million seller “One.” Driven by Chuck Negron’s solo lead vocals on 4 million selling singles, three #1 records , (one which topped the charts for six weeks, “Joy To The World,”) five top 5 hits and seven top 40 hits, Negron put and kept Three Dog Night on the charts for six years. His soaring, soulful, four octave range and unique vocal styling became a part of the American landscape. His gut wrenching performance on the band’s follow up hit to “One”, “Easy to Be Hard” is now a pop classic, as is his beautiful and smooth vocal on “Old Fashioned Love Song.” Chuck’s unmistakable voice exclaiming “Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog” on the multi-Grammy nominated and 1971 Record Of The Year, “Joy To The World” is today a part of Americana, securing a place for Chuck Negron as one of the great singers in rock and pop.

While Chuck was with Three Dog Night they had a phenomenal 18 consecutive top 20 hits, 21 top 40 hits, 8 top 10 hits and 4 number one hits – not to mention 5 top 10 albums and 11 top 20 albums. “We were a self-contained band who performed all the music on our records,” Negron explained. “We picked all the songs, arranged them and were totally involved in production. We never had an A&R person or any record company interference. The band contractually had artistic control.” Few bands were as popular in concert. They pioneered stadium extravaganzas, prompting Rolling Stone Magazine in its 1972 cover story to exclaim “More Gold Than The Stones!” “Bigger Crowds Than Credence!” “Fatter Purses Than Elvis!” Some of their opening acts were the likes of Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, ELO and co-headliner billing with Led Zeppelin.

By 1975, two original members were unable to continue and had to be replaced. In fact, the sex, drugs, rock n roll existence, had taken its toll. Soldiering on after their last million selling single, ironically titled “The Show Must Go On,” the band released their last top forty hit “Til The World Ends” which reached number 32 on the pop charts. Both recordings were selected, arranged and sung by Chuck.

Chuck Negron had a great career within the band’s career. He gave the group their first million seller and fittingly their last. Three Dog Night called it quits in 1976.

Chuck’s bestselling book “Three Dog Nightmare” and his second book “Three Dog Nightmare: The Continuing Chuck Negron Story” chronicles his personal life and death struggle with addiction and the miracle that saved his life on September 17, 1991. Chuck has remained clean and sober ever since.

“In 1992, I studied voice for the first time in my life! I wanted to learn and be better than I had ever been. I discovered a new and wonderful passion for life and my music.” Chuck dedicated himself to a strenuous training regimen that made him stronger than he has ever been. “Live performances can often be like an athletic event, if you’re giving the audience everything you have.” Negron explains with a laugh, “I still train and utilize my vocal coach whenever necessary.” Negron performs upwards of 70 shows a year giving audiences the opportunity to hear his impressive volume of hits plus an exciting repertoire of new songs from his 4 solo CD’s. “Am I Still In Your Heart” was his first solo release in 1995. Then came a beautiful Christmas CD “Joy To The World” released in 1996. Chuck spent over two years writing his book “Three Dog Nightmare” and recorded the accompanying soundtrack CD entitled “The Long Road Back.” His fourth solo effort “Chuck Negron – Live In Concert” recorded at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas was released in 2001 in which one of Chuck’s original songs “Took Me Under” was nominated in 2002 for a PRISM Award for Best Song. In 2005, Chuck released two DVDs “The Chuck Negron Story: Biography of an Entertainer” which won several awards including the 2006 PRISM “Video to Production” Award and also includes classic unseen footage of Three Dog Night live in concert. His second DVD, “Chuck Negron: Live and in Concert” Chuck sings his famous Three Dog Night hits as well as several songs from his four solo CDs.

“I would have nothing without the people who cared for me and helped me find my way,” Negron says. Chuck remains active with several of the organizations whose aim is to keep drugs out of the music industry. Chuck also spends time helping the addicted. Cri-Help in North Hollywood, California has been most important to Chuck’s ongoing recovery. “I’ve been singing, performing and recording for 50 years. I’ve always been grateful for my voice and my life as a musician. I look at it as a gift from God. It has afforded me the opportunity to touch so many people in such a beautiful way. Music has brought me joy, inner peace and comfort that I thrive on. I feel very blessed to be in the game again.” Check out Chuck Negron at: http://www.negron.com/
