A Night With The Super Group

I took a trip to the 12 Step Music Festival in the Florida Keys on November 5, 2011. I had heard about the Rockers In Recovery Super Group they had lined up and was curious to hear them play.
I was a bit pessimistic, as I usually am when it comes to events such as this, but I was dumfounded when I had the opportunity to hear them in action. I knew about the various band members that were playing, although there were several that I was not aware of.

“There are so many ‘wow’ moments” – Dave Marsh, SIRIUS/XM Radio personality / Rolling Stone editor emeritus

“Whatever she touches becomes soulful and passionate.” – Hal Horowitz, The All Music Guide

“Ohlman and Rebel Montez concoct a Soul atmosphere as thick and palpable as a humid Southern night. Ohlman’s stunning originals…blister and soothe in equal measure.” – Brian Baker, Cincinnati CityBeat

The heart of Christine Ohlman has belonged to rock n’ roll from just about the moment she could walk and talk. By the time she traveled from Boston to New York on an overnight train to make her first record at the age of 16, writing the “B” side on the way to the studio, she was already a veteran of the local coffeehouse circuit around New Haven, Connecticut. “The first guy who ever signed me flew down from New York City to hear the band; he signed us the same day,” she says. “We were in the studio practically before we knew what hit us recording a version of Al Kooper’s ‘Wake Me, Shake Me.’ The next thing we knew, we were on the charts and I was in heaven!”

Christine Ohlman

While touring and recording with Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez are the main focus, Ohlman has other all-star concert appearances to her credit, including the Lincoln Center “American Songbook” Series (with Sting and Lou Reed), the 2009 Obama Inaugural Gala, and Celebrate Brooklyn’s Tribute to Bill Withers (with Nona Hendryx and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James). She continues to perform with the SNL Band, appearing with Al Green on the show’s 25th Anniversary Special and in the hilarious 2010 commercial parody “Carter n’ Sons Barbeque.” She is a sought-after studio guest vocalist, appearing on Ian Hunter’s Shrunken Heads (named one the Top 20 CDs of 2007 by the New York Daily News), Big Al Anderson’s Pawn Shop Guitars, and two CDs by esteemed Irish punk group Black 47. Labor of Love: The Music Of Nick Lowe features her vocal collaboration with Marshall Crenshaw on Lowe’s “Cruel To Be Kind.” And her commitment to the blues runs deep, as her scorching duets with the legendary Eddie Kirkland on his CD’s Where You Get Your Sugar and Lonely Street; her guest-shots with Charlie Musselwhite on his Grammy-nominated One Night In America; and her appearance on the Songs Of Willie Dixon (with Sonny Landreth & Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown) and Grammy nominee A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf (with Taj Mahal & Lucinda Williams) give statement.

Dedication to preserving the soul in rock n’ roll has been the hallmark of Christine’s work from the days of The Scratch Band through a stint with Christine Ohlman and The Soul Rockers to her present band Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez’ (Cliff Goodwin-guitars, Michael Colbath-bass, Larry Donahue-drums; original guitarist Eric Fletcher passed away in May, 2006). Her earliest idols were Etta James, Ray Charles, and Jackie Wilson. “My mom taught me to love those artists,” says Christine. “When she was growing up she used to frequent Cafe Society in New York City to hear Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Lena Horne. I just naturally picked up on blues and jazz through her. Then of course there was Elvis, and Jerry Lee, and the artists on Stax and Atlantic. At some point I also began to listen heavily to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Elmore James. So my songwriting reflects influences old and new. I always tend to lean toward wild guitar bands—you know, the ‘crazies’.” (Ohlman continues this fascination with musical tradition via her work as a music writer and musicologist. She was an original editor of the All-Music Guide, edited legendary producer Andrew Loog Oldham’s 2002 autobiography 2Stoned, and is a cover-story-writing contributor to Elmore Magazine)

Ohlman has released six CDs with Rebel Montez. The Hard Way, Radio Queen, Wicked Time, Strip, and 2008 career retrospective Re-Hive are joined by 2010’s The Deep End, her first CD of new material in five years. Co-produced gby Andy York (John Mellencamp), it featuresduets with Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw and guest shots by Levon Helm, Big Al Anderson, G.E. Smith, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, and others.

No stranger to tragedy, Ohlman suffered, in addition to the loss of longtime musical collaborator Fletcher, the death in 2005 of her mate and producer of more than 25 years, Doc Cavalier. Re-Hive is dedicated to his memory (as The Deep End is to Fletcher’s. .Following Cavalier’s passing, she produced a memorial concert at legendary rock club Toad’s Place in New Haven, Connecticut that featured 26 acts and nearly 100 musicians pivotal to the professional life she shared with him. “This is a time of reordering in my life,” she said recently. “There are no words to describe the empty spaces left by these losses. I feel I honor the memory of Doc and Eric by creating, by writing, and by performing. It hasn’t been easy by any means. But friends and fellow musicians have been extraordinary in their generosity and support. Michael Colbath, Larry Donahue, Cliff Goodwin and I look forward to the next record and to future collaborations.” Ohlman says, “The songs on The Deep End deal, in some ways, with the subject of loss, but much more importantly with the ways that love intersects with life to bring a kind of joy into one’s heart that is sometimes bittersweet.”

With her trademark mile-high platinum beehive hairdo and enviable collection of sequins and rhinestones, Ohlman looks like a lady to be reckoned with, and when she opens her mouth to sing, the truth comes out. But underneath it all lurks a no-frills approach to music. In her own words—”I give it to an audience straight, which is the way I like it myself. Yes, I like to shout, and I like to croon, and I love to wail. I just need to get in the groove and rock—not think too much about it– tear it up or soothe it over. I’ve loved rock n’ roll since I was a little girl, and I’ll love it forever. It’s my greatest kick and my greatest privilege to be able to get up on a stage and rip it apart. That’s rock n’ roll to me. I’m here to set your soul on fire.”

Aloe Vera – not just a plant

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Jun.08, 2011, under Home

Relationships are the Primary Meal

Carol Harblin (CHHC)

Ever DRINK aloe vera juice? It’s very nourishing and soothing.

Aloe vera juice aids in digestive disorders. It helps relieve gas, and intestinal discomfort.

People who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome would most benefit from this delicious juice.

Where can you buy it? You can find it at Whole Foods, or any health food store.

The first time I saw it, I was curious of how it tasted. It looked refreshing….so I bought it. I buy it whenever I can now, usually once a week or so. It gives a very soothing mouth-feel and it does comfort the digestion too.

Just because something may be good for you, that does not mean you go out and stock up on it and consume copious amounts in a short time!!!!! This goes for anything – but particularly nutritionally related!!! Practice moderation!

If you have an aloe vera plant, as you know that it does come in handy when you have skin rashing or other wounds. You would apply aloe vera just as you would any other triple antibiotic cream.

It even feels great on sunburns!!
If you have a bad sunburn, you may chill the aloe vera leaf in the refrigerator so that it feels cooler when applied to skin.

I wouldn’t advise making your own aloe vera juice with the leaf plants unless you have the proper recipe for it. Everything has a process.

Go find some aloe vera juice, and enjoy some today!

HBAT vs. HBOT – What’s the Difference?

HBAT vs. HBOT – What’s the Difference? « Holistic Lifestyles Radio

HBAT vs. HBOT – What’s the Difference?

by Holistic Lifestyles Radio on Jun.08, 2011, under Home

When discussing hyperbaric protocols and treatment options with your prescribing physician it is important to know the dosage of oxygen, frequency and duration of the dive(s). Since hyperbaric treatment is commonly referred out to a specialized clinic or medical supplier, understanding this information could make the difference in the results you achieve.

HBAT is an abbreviation for Hyperbaric Air Therapy. Essentially, the chamber occupant breathes the same room air used to pressurize the hyperbaric chamber. No oxygen is used other than the oxygen contained in the normal air we breathe. Room air, is also referred to as Normoxic Nitrox. It contains 21% Oxygen, 78% Nitrogen with the 1% balance comprised of inert trace gases that naturally exist is our atmosphere. For the purposes of these dosage calculations this 1% is factored into the total Nitrogen percentage.

HBOT is an abbreviation for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The chamber occupant breathes 100% gaseous oxygen or when oxygen concentrators are used, as a high of a percentage as the equipment is capable of delivering. The hyperbaric chamber may be completely pressurized with oxygen or the chamber is pressurized with Air (Normoxic Nitrox) and the oxygen is delivered to the patient through a B.I.B.S. (Built in Breathing System.) Types of BIBS include Non-Rebreather Masks, Demand Masks and Oxygen Hoods.

It is important to note that because of cost effectiveness, convenience and safety more hyperbaric chambers pressurize with Air and utilize a BIBS than pressurize with pure oxygen. US Navy Hyperbaric Protocol is exclusively pressurization with Normoxic Nitrox and Oxygen via BIBS.

The premise for utilizing just HBAT is that the increased pressure of the chamber elevates the partial pressure (percentage) of oxygen being provided to the tissues. It however overlooks that the partial pressure of nitrogen is significantly elevated as well. This is a result of Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressure. Simply stated, the sum of the whole is equal to all of the parts. In this case the “parts” are Nitrogen and Oxygen.

21% + 79% = 100%

Another way we could express this is:

.21 + .79 = 1.0

In the case of HBAT at a gauge pressure of 4 psi, which is approximately 1.3 ata:

.27 + 1.03 = 1.3

So yes, HBAT at 4 psig elevates the partial pressure of oxygen to from 21% (.21) to 27% (.27). It also elevates the partial pressure of nitrogen from 79% (.79) to 103% (1.03). Depending on what you are using HBAT for this may do more harm than good. The issue here is that while HBAT has been suggested in a small number of clinical trials to be marginally effective for a few conditions, there are other conditions where HBAT is known to be completely ineffective. There are also some conditions, such as infectious diseases and wound care where HBAT actually creates a negative, potentially harmful ischemic reaction. This is specifically related to the elevated partial pressure of nitrogen also being dissolved into the tissues, etc. An example of a condition where HBAT treatment could potentially cause harm is Lyme Disease. Not only does that low of a dosage of oxygen do nothing for the auto-immune system it pushes the bacillus further toward protecting itself with its protein coating camouflage.

During HBOT the patient is breathing a much higher partial pressure of oxygen. The actual dosage of oxygen delivered to the tissues, cerebral, synovial and lymphatic fluids is drastically higher but the partial pressure of nitrogen is nominal. Using the same example, HBOT using 100% oxygen at a gauge pressure of 4 psi delivers almost five time more. This may lead to the question that if some oxygen is good than is more better? Perhaps, but only to a point and dosage is specific to the exact condition being treated.

If your doctor prescribed HBOT but you were only going to get HBAT would you want to know? Of course you would and now you do…

How to calculate actual dosage is part of the ANDI Hyperbaric Course Curriculum. HyperbaricsRx offers a variety of seminars, courses and certification programs that greatly elaborate on the general concepts I’ve discussed here.

Life Can Change One Day At A Time

Addiction is not always death or homelessness it could be in the form of being saved from one’s self and one’s actions while under the influence of alcohol or drugs by being arrested. Unfortunate but true things happen that would not if a person was of their right mind.

We at All Florida Bail Bonds Inc. understands addiction and the help that is needed for the addicted person to get treatment and to have a true shot of doing something different with their lives. A bondsmen is often the first person to help with such action.

When a loved one gets the call please get me out of jail they feel hopeless, fear, and anger. Loved ones don’t know what to do with a friend, son, daughter, mother or father that is out of control and has ended up in jail because of drugs and alcohol.

All Florida Bail Bonds Inc. knows how to set the bonds where if a person is unwilling to follow though on help for their issues they can be remanded back to jail by revoking the loved ones bond.

This is a talk you should have with us before bonding your loved one or friend and let us help you help them with a contract of conduct. This contract will need to be followed as the first form of intervention needed. This action can be in place by All Florida Bail Bonds Inc anywhere in the United States.

We also know from time to time we may find ourselves needing legal help of some sort or another that may not have any thing at all to do with addiction. Most often for un-controllable and unforeseen reasons we could find ourselves or a loved one in trouble with the law. We understand that it’s not always intentional or one’s fault, but bad things can happen to good people and that is why you might need to find a Bail Bond Agent to help get us out of jail. It might even be a friend or family member that needs help in another city or state All Florida Bail Bonds Inc. can help.

Rockers In Recovery Host John Hollis said during his interview with Ricky Byrd “Folks I just listened to the mastered version of the song it went right to the heart and had us all in tears. “Broken Is A Place” will touch many people and help many people find a new way of life”.

“Broken Is A Place”- the new song written by Ricky Byrd/Richie Supa ,Co produced by Ricky Byrd/Bob Stander, Drums: Shawn Murray, Bass: Bob Stander, Guitars: Ricky Byrd Vocals: Ricky Byrd, Keyboards: Richie Supa, Mixed: Bob Stander, Mastered: Ray Kennedy in Nashville.

“Broken Is A Place” is a must for any download collection. Ricky went to a place only one who has been there can write about and though this song can let others know change is possible.

Ricky Byrd Bio:

Lotta dues Jim, Lotta dues

That’s a line from a play about Lenny Bruce, and man oh man ain’t that the truth!!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining! I’ve had an unbelievable career so far and I’m very grateful.

Imagine a 13 year old sitting in his bedroom with his first guitar that “almost” stays in tune. He’s dreaming big dreams, hoping someday……you know the rest!

Well I got my wish. I’ve traveled the world with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, had a couple of hit records and played guitar for two of my favorites–Roger Daltrey and Ian Hunter. I’ve also had the damn good fortune to have shared a stage with everyone from Jimmy Page, Leslie West, Steve Marriott to Rufus Thomas (I got to “Walk the Dog”)

I’ve had artists who I love and respect cover songs I’ve written ,and even got to decorate a wall in Byrdland with a few gold and platinum records.

Nice huh?

Problem is I’m not the kind that can rest on my laurels (you know how painful that can be!).

This is now and now I’m a solo artist–playing my songs, making my music and fighting my battles!

To be honest I’m feeling a little punchy from all the fighting.

But I promise you this…they’’ll have to carry me out of the ring still swingin’ and still singin’.

Let’s face it the music business (what’s left of it) is not for the faint of heart. it can break your spirit and leave you bitter.”It was you Charlie…you shoulda watched out for me. I coulda been a contender!”

Sorry, I had a Brando moment!.

Anyway as the saying goes… you buttered your bread now you gotta sleep in it…or something like that.

Where was I? Oh yeah

These days I have no illusions or expectations other than making the coolest music I can and have fun doing it.

So keep your eyes and ears open cause sooner or later I’ll be coming to your town. It might be a stadium,a theatre,a club or maybe even a coffeehouse, but you can bet the farm I’ll have a big ass grin on my face and be happy to be there.

See you in the trenches, Ricky

History Of Crossroads Centre, Of Antigua

A letter from our founder, Mr. Eric Clapton

For many years I have visited Antigua, the beautiful Caribbean island located in the heart of the West Indies. Antigua has always been a special refuge – a safe place, a serene place where one can begin the process of healing from even the most devastating events and life situations.

As a recovering addict and alcoholic, many people over the years spoke with me about the problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse on the island. Subsequently, around 1993, I began to speak with more and more people about the possibility of founding a Centre on the island for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. There was certainly a need, and so the dream and the vision were born.

My vision was to create a Centre of the highest caliber to treat people of the Caribbean and throughout the world. The Centre would be staffed with experienced and internationally recognized professionals. The cost of treatment would be held to the lowest possible level, ensuring affordability and accessibility. And most importantly, this non-profit Centre would provide treatment scholarships for people of the Caribbean region and around the world.

Well, this vision became a reality and Crossroads opened its doors to the world in 1998. Since then it has quickly developed into an internationally recognized Treatment Centre of Excellence, providing services to individuals and their families suffering from the devastating effects of addiction.

Crossroads is like no other Treatment Centre. It is the perfect place to begin the road of recovery and utilizes a combination of effective therapies to address addiction and recovery, while capturing the spiritual serenity that many have found unique to Antigua. Within the serene, healing atmosphere individuals participate in a structured 29-day residential 12 step based program that allows clients to experience a whole person wellness approach to recovery.

We believe that the majority of individuals suffering from addiction have the capacity for recovery if given the proper foundation to begin their journey. At Crossroads we help provide that foundation.

Sincerely,

Erics Signature

Eric Clapton

SUNRISE, Fla. – Cannatelli Builders is pleased to announced that its consortium partner, the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in Lake Worth, has been awarded a federal grant worth $23.3 million for renovating homes in a targeted area. The grant is specifically meant for use in purchasing and refurbishing some 130 residential properties within the city center.

As part of the agreement, the CRA together with its 20 non-profit partners and contractors should spend the amount within a fixed period. Half of the money should be spent in a period of two years while all necessary purchases should be completed in three years time.

Lake Worth Mayor Rene Varela is grateful and enthusiastic over this development saying that although the project is quite ambitious, they are positive about doubling or even tripling the investment. He expressed confidence that more private capital will come in to this home makeover project. City Commissioner Scott Maxwell himself echoed the same sentiment.

One of the major reasons why Lake Worth acquired a huge grant from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was due to its high rate of vacancy and foreclosures, a criteria covered under the agency’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The increase in the number of unoccupied and foreclosed homes was attributed mainly to the huge drop in home values at the height of the global recession last year.

In the target area alone where the CRA will focus its renovation efforts, there are currently 1,764 homes in place with about 130 of them in foreclosure and 206 in pre-foreclosure. However under the grant program, many of these properties will benefit from the rehabilitation works and many low income families will be able to acquire homes at a more affordable rate.

Specifically, the Lake Worth home makeover program has five objectives. These are to buy and rehabilitate 75 homes for resale; buying and renovating 25 properties for rentals; demolishing 10 homes that are no longer deemed in good condition; establishing a land bank of 30 lots that will eventually be developed into housing and providing incentives to law enforcement officers. The renovated homes and properties for resale and rentals will then go to buyers earning 50 percent and 120 percent or less of the median income in the area.

For their part, non-profit partner Adopt-a-Family of the Palm Beaches will sell homes to buyers eligible in its required income bracket while Habitat for Humanity plans to renovate homes and use some of the lots to build more new homes for people who meet certain income criteria.

The CRA’s executive director Joan Oliva also revealed their Cultural Renaissance Program still covered by the Lake Worth grant. This aims to bring in artists into the city as a way to encourage more business activities and maintain safe and sound neighborhoods.

As a consortium partner, Cannatelli Builders will be involved in the architectural design and construction process of the homes to undergo refurbishment. Being a trusted and proven contractor, the company is capable of managing all types of home remodeling projects putting emphasis always on the quality of their work.
