Centering prayer as a discipline is designed to withdraw our attention from the ordinary flow of our thoughts. We tend to identify ourselves with that flow. But there is a deeper part of ourselves.

God Pillow

This prayer opens our awareness to the spiritual level of our being. This level might be compared to a great river on which our memories, images, feelings, inner experiences, and the awareness of outward things are resting.

Many people are so identified with the ordinary flow of their thoughts and feelings that they are not aware of the source from which these mental objects are emerging. Like boats or debris floating along the surface of a river, our thoughts and feelings must be resting on something.

They are resting on the inner stream of consciousness, which is our participation in God’s being. That level is not immediately evident to ordinary consciousness. Since we are not in immediate contact with that level, we have to do something to develop our awareness of it. It is the level of our being that makes us most human. The values that we find there are more delightful than the values that float along the surface of the psyche.

We need to refresh ourselves at this deep level every day. Just as we need exercise, food, rest and sleep, so also we need moments of interior silence because they bring the deepest kind of refreshment. pg 35 Open Mind, Open Heart, Thomas Keating.

Life has moved very quickly for me. So quickly that I woke up one day and found myself isolated from my family and LIFE (not to mention God). Life literally brought me to my knees. I’ll call this my first “Spiritual Awakening”.

Every time I surrender, a Spiritual Transformation happens. A door opens and I know God is listening. I know I have to listen well.

Since developing a relationship with God, LIFE IS FULLER. Life keeps on being busy… that doesn’t stop. But now I take time in the morning, get on my knees, pray, and ask God to direct me during the day. And, every time I ask, I find my day runs smoother. And, at the end of the day, I get on my knees and say “Thank you”. That is the best part.

So here I am. Inspired and knowing that great things will happen.

I also know that when the not-so-good things happen, I AM NOT ALONE. Ask God to come with you during your day. And use your GODpillow in good health.

GODpillow was born out of necessity…life literally brought me to my knees – or one can say….drugs and alcohol brought me to my knees so that I would connect with my Higher Power which I called GOD. Being inspired I created the “GODpillow”, but I didn’t stop there…I realized I need gentle reminders to get me centered throughout my day, whether visually, auditory, sensory or tactile. So at GODpillow.com you will find various products to meet those needs, so you can design your own Sacred Space…

What did you say? What’s a GODpillow? Well the answer is simple, it is BOTH a prayer kneeler and a meditation bench. The reason why I have two different categories is simple, people identify differently to both of those intentions. To me, I am not attached to the posture of kneeling or sitting in meditation – what is important is the ability to be still. In order for me to be still, I must be comfortable, AND the reason to be still? To hear God speak….hence the GODpillow. Also note: Inspirations may differ in those Prayer categories, and those of Meditation Categories…check out both!

Now the Inspirational Pillow is a throw pillow with embroidered messages- which evolved for those who do not, or will not kneel in prayer or sit in meditation. For me the pillow is a mental door opener – it allows one to pause…in order to read it…who knows where that intention will lead…maybe a prayer or a moment of contemplation.

The Sound Pillow has consumed a vast amount of my resources…Over the course of the last fifteen years; I spent hundreds of hours talking to clients and customers, doctors, clinicians and counselors servicing all walks of life in a variety of fields. I have invested a great deal of emotional, physical and financial resources as well.

So why do I keep it alive? Why is it still available and evolved into the Sound Pillow Sleep System? Easy. I believe that God places people in our paths at the right time. In many cases, He sends them to us when we need them most. We just have to be willing to recognize and listen to the message. What happened to me and the Sound Pillow? I crossed paths, over the phone, with three unique individuals and experienced three profound conversations.

The Early Morning Call came in early 2000. I had been working with the Sound Pillow for just over three years and was not getting anywhere with it. It seemed the only people that understood its potential for the sleep deprived, were Michelle and I. It was exhausting our very limited resources.

So I decided to “kill it.” I told Michelle I just couldn’t do it anymore and I said: “That’s it. I am killing it in the morning.” Those were my exact words….

The next morning, I was in the office early getting ready to shut down the Sound Pillow web site and send some emails to announce the end…My phone rang. I ignored it waiting for the Voice Mail system to pick-up as I really did not feel like talking to anyone as I felt defeated and I am not a morning person in the first place. But, the phone just kept on ring…I answered.

“Is this Scott?” – Asked a rough male voice.

“That’s why I said this is Scott.” – Remember, I was NOT in a good mood.

“You can’t kill the Sound Pillow!” he said emphatically.

—Deep Breathe. Long Silence.—

“You can’t kill the pillow. You have to keep it going!” He was emphatic.

I was beyond stunned and at a loss for words. He used the exact word I used the night before, in my bathroom, when deciding to “kill” the pillow. He did not say “You can’t – Stop it. Shelve it. Quit it.” Or use any other wording. He said “You can’t kill it.” Then I recognized what was happening and I listened.

I spoke with this gentleman for about 30 minutes. Along the way I asked why he made the call. He told me he was compelled to pick-up the phone, but was not 100% sure why other than to tell me how much the Sound Pillow was helping him and that he had to reach out and let me know. He also wanted to be sure others had the same opportunity to get the meaningful sleep he now experienced. And finally, how getting a good night’s sleep, “literally changed his life” – his words.

I have invested a great deal of emotional, physical and financial resources as well. From a purely “business perspective,” there has been little to no ROI (Return on Investment); at least not financially.

So why do I keep it alive? Why is it still available and evolved into the Sound Pillow Sleep System? Because I believe that God places people on our path at the right time. In many cases, He sends them to us when we need them most. We just have to be willing to recognize and listen to the message. How does this apply to the Sound Pillow? This is the second installment in the Three Phone Calls series: Stories of my experiences with three unique individuals of which I had three profound conversations.

A Father’s Call. In late 2009, Ron W. called. That morning Ron was sitting in a waiting room, waiting for his physician to discuss his Tinnitus. While in wait mode, Ron stumbled upon the Sound Pillow in Tinnitus Today and called us to see if we could help.

About 10 minutes into the conversation, he suddenly switched gears on me and started talking about his daughter Angela. Angela had just been picked-up off the Ohio streets. She had run away over two-years earlier and turned to prostitution to support her heroine addiction. The story of Ron’s two-year search and his emotional discovery of her condition, were moving. My daughter was six and I just did not want to try imagining myself in his shoes…Thinking of my daughter, I was compelled to do something nice for Ron and his daughter Angela. So I sent 20 Sound Pillows to the Darlene Bishop Home for Life, with zero expectations. I was just compelled to do it.

A couple of weeks later I received a letter from Beth Ward, the Director of the Darlene Bishop Home for Life. She stated “The Sound Pillows are a huge success!!” – I had no idea what she meant, the Sound Pillows were just gifts to a group of ladies that I thought needed a morale boost. So, I called Beth and was amazed to learn the girls were sleeping and they were sleeping well.

Because of a Father’s Call, I started working with clients in various stages of Addiction Recovery. We have tested the Sound Pillow Sleep System, with phenomenal success, at G&G Holistic Addiction Treatment Center, Palm Partners, Sunrise Detox and Destination Hope. The results were wonderful. The vast majority of the client’s were getting a meaningful night’s sleep. Meaningful sleep is healing sleep and it improved their moods, their outlooks for success, they were much more relaxed and in many cases, even more pleasant to be around. Being a sponsor of the Valentines’ Day Weekend Love of Recovery Concert Live Broadcast, I was able to spend some quality time with both Ricky Byrd and Richie Supa. Even though I had no real expectations, I was truly surprised by the open and relaxed conversations as well as the laugh out loud story’s we shared from our collective experiences living on the road. What I was not expecting, was to learn how big of fans they both are of the Sound Pillow. Very cool.

Ricky uses his Sound Pillow to help him sleep. Being around loud/amplified music for the better part of his life, Ricky developed Tinnitus a/k/a “ringing in the ears”. Fortunately it is not so severe that it interferes with his day time life. However at night, when his environment quiets, his Tinnitus gets annoying and hinders his ability to fall asleep. In March I am back in Florida to participate in the Evolution of Treatment: An Experiential “Interactive” Conference Where Science Meets Recovery conference. I will be discussing the importance of sleep in the recovery journey as well as presenting the results of the Sleep System by Sound Pillow® In-Clinic tests.

The conference is going to be very cool. As you will have the opportunity to try and learn about a variety of therapies including Massage, Sound and Music Therapies (now tell me that doesn’t sound very cool). The conference runs March 9th – 11th at the Deauville Beach Resort in Miami Beach. If you are in the area, you should stop by as the general public is most welcome.
